  • The Big Lebowski by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen
It's been 10 years since this cult classic came out and if you haven't seen it yet, the time is now. This movie about three bowling buddies ("You mark that frame an 8, and you're entering a world of pain"), a stolen rug ("That rug really tied the room together") and a kidnapping scheme that has gone horribly, and hilariously, wrong ("You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude") never gets old. One of the lighter of the Coen brothers comedies, it's endlessly quotable. Reviewed by Nova on January 02, 2009.

  • Girls Rock! by Shane King & Arne Johnson
What happens when you gather a group of girls from 8 to 18, give them a mike and tell them the sky's the limit? Something beautiful. These girls really do rock - whether it is their musical ambition, desire to find their true selves or just treat each other right - these girls will knock your socks off. If you cheered for the kids at the end of School of Rock, or rooted for the Seniors in Young@Heart, this is a must-see. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll headbang. • The Lives of Others by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
Why did I wait so long to see this movie? The Lives of Others won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, and it is well-deserved. In East Germany before the wall came down, the Stasi (secret police) spied on artists they thought might have subversive leanings. A Stasi officer assigned to monitor the wiretaps in a writer's home starts to become sympathetic. We follow his subtle transformation from a stereotypical militant oppressor to a sensitive human being. It's much more nuanced than I can put into words. Watch the DVD extras, too - especially the interview with the writer/director and the experiences of the lead actor, who was investigated by the Stasi himself as a young actor. • Simoun by Junji Nishimura
There are so many good things going for this anime -- compelling story, good art, cool CG stuff and strong female characters. The gender mixing/sexuality aspect is really interesting but I was really annoyed when these same strong young priestesses change gender to "officially female" and ended up taking a backseat to the girls who became boys. How can a society be sexist if everyone is female for the first 17 years of their lives? Gripe aside, it's awesome. Reviewed by Chach on November 26, 2008.

  • 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days by Cristian Mungiu
A spare, harsh film about two days in the lives of two young women in Ceauşescu's Romania. Reviewed by Midge on November 22, 2008.
